Area schools to be represented at IHSAA state finals in track

— There is nothing routine about making it to the Indiana High School State Finals in a sports.

This year the odds were pretty good the area would be well represented at the track and field event.

And it is.

Batesville High School, Oldenburg Academy and East Central High School all have athletes advancing to state’s biggest event, which will be held Saturday, June 1, at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex, Indiana University, Bloomington.

The athletes earned a berth in the finals with a top three finish at the Shelbyville Regional on Tuesday.

The Batesville Lady Bulldogs had three girls advance.

Ginny Westerfeld placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.44.

Rylee Goldsmith showed her speed in the 400-meter dash and was runner-up with a mark of 59.96.

To close out the evening, Kim Tidman punched her ticket with a third place finish in the high jump with a height of 5-04.25.

Oldenburg Academy will have two individual event performers.

Meredith Maier placed second in the 800-meter run with a personal best time of 2:21.70, which was incredibly close to the winning time of 2:21.36 by Rachael Sollman of Columbus North.

Sarah Billingsley was runner-up in the 3,200-meter run with a personal best time of 11:07.52. Billingsley’s time also met the state standard.

Oldenburg’s 4 x 800 meter relay made a big push at the end, but fell just short in their bid to advance. The race for the final spot came down to the final 200 meters and eventually the final steps. Kirsten Ricke ran a personal best split to anchor the relay and crossed the finish line .01 behind Center Grove. Sarah Billingsley, Rachel Billingsley, Maier and Ricke teamed up for a season best time of 9:49.75, which was just behind CG’s time of 9:49.74.

The Lady Trojans will be represented by Hannah Patton in the 200-meter dash. She was third with a time of 25.95.

East Central 4 x 100 meter relay team - Patton, Kelli Cartuyvelles, Kendall Gindling and Olivia Fette - placed second with a time of 50.43,

In the team competition, the Lady Bulldogs were sixth with 34 points, while Oldenburg was ninth with 22. East Central was 11th of the 25 teams scoring points.
