BHS junior varsity wins county tourney

---- — The Batesville High School junior varsity basketball team was impressive in a 47-22 victory over South Ripley in the championship game of the Ripley County tournament on Saturday.

The Bulldogs set the tone with a quick start in the first quarter.

Freshman Garrett Burkhart sparked the Bulldogs with 11 first quarter points, including a trio of 3-pointers.

Batesville closed out the first quarter with a 15-8 lead.

Burkhart and Wyatt Schebler helped coach Jay Gerkin’s crew keep pace in the second quarter. The two combined for nine of the team’s 15 points as the Bulldogs entered halftime with a 30-12 advantage.

The offensive pace slowed in the second half, but the Bulldogs were still solid at the defensive end. South Ripley managed only 10 points in the final 12 minutes and could not make up any ground.

Evan Blanken gave the Bulldogs a needed lift at the offensive end in the second half. The junior center scored eight of the team’s 17 points over the final two quarters.

The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Burkhart with 18 points and Blanken with 12.

Batesville earned a berth in the tournament finals with a 38-37 victory over the Milan Indians.

The Bulldogs rallied from a two point deficit in the fourth quarter to edge the Indians.

Milan led 21-16 at halftime and later 27-25 at the end of the third quarter.

Burkhart and Jacob Vogelsang split 10 of the team’s 13 fourth quarter points to lead the way.

For the game, the Bulldogs were led in scoring by Burkhart with 18 points and Vogelsang with 12.

Milan was led by sophomore Payton Healy with 15 points and Blane Beck with seven.
