---- — The Oldenburg Academy Twisters came up short in their bid for a second win in boys varsity basketball.
The Milan Indians defeated the visiting Twisters 65-56 Friday night.
The Twisters got off to a fast start behind the shooting of sophomore guard Matt Moorman. The Indians struggled to contain Moorman. The OA sophomore scored 12 of the team’s 14 points as they took a five point lead at the first break.
Moorman scored four more points within in the first two minutes of the second quarter, but the Indians finally managed to counter with better defense and some improved offense of their own.
The Indians got a 3-pointer by Logan Alloway and cut the OA lead to 18-17 with 6:38 to play in the half.
Milan later tied the game on a pair of free throws by Kyle Meyer and took their first lead on a rebound basket by senior Cooper Wade.
Moorman countered with a field goal at 1:07 to tie the score at 26-26 before Alloway buried a 3-pointer from the corner to give the Indian’s a 29-26 at halftime.
The Indians held Moorman to only four points over the final 16 minutes of the game.
Ted Geis picked up some of the scoring, but the Indians stretched their lead as the third quarter progressed. Milan extended it to 10 points before Geis scored the team’s first points of the second half at the 5:10 mark.
Four straight points from Geis, a field goal Matty Hurm and two free throws by Cory Schuman got the Twisters within four points with 3:30 to play in the third period.
After pair of free throws by Geis made it 38-36, the Indians went on a run to close the third and begin the fourth quarter. The Milan lead jumped back to 10 points on four unanswered points by Logan Karsteter.
The Milan lead later grew to as many as 12 points and the Twisters would get only as close as seven inside of four minutes.
Moorman, who scored 18 points in the first half, finished the night with a game-high 22 points. Hurm was second on the team with 11 points. Geis and Kurt Sarringhaus each had eight for the Twisters.
Milan was led in scoring by Alloway with 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Jon Spurlock was also in double figures with 13 points.
The Twisters dropped to 1-3 on the season with the loss, while Milan moved to 3-1.
Indians win JV contest 37-34
The Twisters made a late run in the fourth quarter, but came up short against the host Indians.
The OA junior varsity suffered a 37-34 loss to Milan.
Milan’s Sam Simpkins hit some key free throws down the stretch to help preserve the victory.
Oldenburg trailed 18-12 at halftime. They managed to cut the deficit to 24-22 by the end of the third quarter.
Drew Kloepfer led the Twisters on offense with 17 points followed by Tyler Hesselbrock with six.
Milan was led in scoring by Allen Laws with 11 points and Simpkins with nine.
