---- — Batesville and Oldenburg Academy traveled to Milan for a three-way swim meet with the host Lady Indians.
After a close first four events, the Lady Bulldogs began to pull away from the other two teams. Batesville finished with a winning score of 143 points with OA not too far back with 101. Milan was a distant third with 55 points.
“This was a close meet after the 50 yard freestyle,” BHS coach TJ Greene commented. “Our girls really swam well in the second half of the meet.”
The Lady Bulldogs won 9 of the 11 events including all three relays.
“Many of these girls grew up swimming together on the Batesville summer team, so it is fun for them to get together for a regular season meet,” Greene commented. “They really bring out the best in each other.”
Several exciting races and places were decided by less than one second.
Oldenburg Academy’s Caroline Storms finished just ahead of Batesville’s Emily Gutzwiller (BHS) in the individual medley. Oldenburg’s Huntyr Rose was third in the event.
Batesville freshman Taylor Villani won the 50 freestyle, while OA’s Meredith Meier finished second just .10 ahead of Audrey Hall.
Gutzwiller was first in the 100 butterfly and teammate Hannah Cox edged Oldenburg’s Erica Geers by 1.01 for third.
Storms claimed first place in the 100 freestyle with Batesville’s Elizabeth Weiler just .58 behind. Audrey Hall was third.
Villani was touched first in the 500 free. Oldenburg’s Mikaela Fangman was second followed by BHS senior Ally Ritter.
Emily Weiler and Hanna Cox went 1-2 in the 100 backstroke followed by Lady Twister Elaine Welage.
In the final individual event of the evening, Elizabeth Weiler edged OA’s Fangman by just .17. Sara Espin was third for the Lady Bulldogs.
“These races could have gone either way,” Greene commented. “They were very close.
“I am very proud of our girls and their work in and out of their turns. It made the difference in several races,” he added.
The 200 free relay (Elizabeth Weiler, Hall, Gutzwiller, Villani) placed first and posted the third fastest time ever at BHS.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 7-3 on the season.
