Weiler returns to State Finals

The Batesville Herald-Tribune

---- — Batesville High School senior Matt Weiler will be making a return trip the IHSAA State Finals in swimming.

The BHS captain will be competing in the 50 yard freestyle this weekend at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Weiler earned a berth by meeting the state standard during his third place finish at the Columbus North Sectional. This will be his second trip to the state finals. He placed 14th as a member of the 200 yard freestyle relay in 2012.

His sectional time of 21.11 is seeded fifth in the 50 freestyle. Sam Loescher of Columbus North is the top seed with a time of 20.64.

The BHS senior, who is one of seven Bulldog swimmers to score at least 1,000 points, will leave Batesville second on the all-time scoring list, according to coach TJ Greene. He has won nine Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference titles.

Weiler has improved each season in the sprint event. His time in the 50 freestyle was 24.89 as a freshman, dipped below 22 seconds by his junior year and has a season best of 21.11 as a senior.

The improvement seen over his four years swimming at Batesville is a direct result of hard work and a commitment to be the best swimmer he can.

“Matt took it upon himself to supplement his training with a personal trainer,” Greene commented. “He accomplished all of his goals by training here in Batesville over the last 10 years!

“It shows how talented and strong he is that he is able to succeed in all of the strokes without a season long approach to any one of them. The impressive thing about Matt is that his times in all of his strokes have never flattened out. They have continued to drop throughout his swimming career,” he added.

In addition to the hard work put into the swimming, Weiler is a equally impressive as a leader in the classroom as well.

The 2013 Bulldog Award winner for outstanding effort has been recognized as Academic All-State and Academic All-America in 2014. He has been a member of four National Team Scholar Award winners.
