Weiler advances to state finals in 50 free

The Batesville Bulldogs will again be represented at the IHSAA State Finals for swimming.

Batesville High School senior Matt Weiler met the state standard in the 50 yard freestyle at the Columbus North Sectional on Saturday.

The top 16 qualifiers from Thursday’s preliminary heats advanced to the second day of competition with the top eight vying for the sectional title in each event. The event champion and those bettering the state standard earn a berth in the state finals.

Weiler finished the 50 free in third place with a time of 21.11, which was better than the state cut time of 21.59. He also placed second in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 48.16.

The BHS senior had a busy day on Saturday. In addition to the two individual events, Weiler competed on a pair of relay teams.

The 200 medley relay team of Weiler, Thomas Hatcher, Jacob Hawkins and Seth Parker placed fifth with a time of 1:43.94. It is the fourth fastest time in BHS history.

Weiler, Graham Hunter, Clayton McKinley and Evan Miller were fifth with a time of 1:35.53 in the 200 free relay.

Hatcher advanced to the second day of competition in a pair of individual events. He was fifth in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.72 and 11th in the 100 freestyle.

Parker was 10th in the 100 yard backstroke with a personal best time of 1:02.42 and 16th in the 100 freestyle.

Hawkins had a personal best time of 1:03.04 in the 100 yard butterfly to place 16th. He was also 12th in the 100 yard backstroke.

Hunter, McKinley, Hawkins and Parker competed in the 400 yard freestyle relay and placed seventh with a time of 3:49.09.

The Oldenburg Academy Twisters did not have any swimmers in individual events on Saturday, but were represented in all three relay events.

Chris Nurrenburg, Nathan Hurm, Jeremy Kelnhofer and Liam Mungcal teamed up to place 10th in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 2:13.74.
