St. Louis holds off Holy Family for CYO victory

The St. Louis Bruins CYO basketball team defeated Holy Family by a score of 63-62 to win the 2014 Batesville Deanery tournament.

St. Louis jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, but by the end of the first quarter Holy Family tied the game at 13-13.

“We knew going in it would have to play our best,” St. Louis coach Roger Dietz commented. “Unfortunately, our quick start didn’t help us as we picked up the some early fouls to key players and that hampered us.”

The game stayed close throughout the second quarter and a late run by St. Louis gave them a 25-21 lead at halftime.

“We didn’t do a good job on the boards in the first half and we didn’t move our feet on defense, which caused us to get in foul trouble,” Dietz noted.

The Bruins outscored Holy Family 21-13 in the third quarter and took a 46-34 lead into the final quarter.

With just under three minutes to play in the game, St. Louis led by eight points.

Holy Family battled back late in the game.

Holy Family closed the game to 62-61 with less than 10 seconds to play. The Bruins hit one of two free throw attempts to make it 63-61.

A mental mistake on the inbounds play led to a technical foul. Holy Family hit one of the two attempts and was awarded the ball out of bounds. Holy Family had a chance to win the game, but the final shot bounced out.

“This was a great game that you hate to see either team lose,” Dietz commented. “I am really proud of this team, we battled through foul trouble and poor free throw shooting down the stretch and still found a way to win.”

St. Louis was led in scoring by Ben Wilson 21 points and Connor Dickey with 17. Jordan Dickey (12) and Jacob Wilson (10) were also in double figures.

Tom Chaffee was the top scorer for Holy Family with 19 points followed by Justin Laswell with 15. Noah Gausman was third on the team with 13 points.
