OA nets two wins in three days

The Batesville Herald-Tribune

---- — The Oldenburg Academy varsity basketball team played three games in three days.

The Twisters split two games at the McKee Munk Invitational (Henryville) and followed up with a victory over Waldron.

The Twisters lost in the opening round of the Invitational to Crothersville (68-65) and capped their play with a 65-52 victory over Shawe Memorial.

The second win of three games came on Saturday against the visiting Mohawks by a score of 67-51.

Waldron controlled the tempo early in the game and it was reflected on the scoreboard. Coach Jeff Gorrell’s squad led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter.

The momentum began to shift in the second quarter and the course of the game changed for good in the third.

After falling behind by 11 points, the Twisters scored 11 unanswered points to tie the game at 20-20 in the second quarter. They later took their first lead of the game on back-to-back field goals by Kurt Sarringhaus and Drew Kloepfer at the 2:02 mark.

The two teams entered halftime knotted at 26-26.

The difference in the game came in the opening minutes of the third quarter.

The Twisters rattled off 11 straight points. Ted Geis opened the second half with a field goal followed by a pair of Kloepfer 3-pointers and one by Sarringhaus.

The offensive flurry forced Gorrell to call a timeout. The break in action slowed the pace, but the Twisters were still able to take a 45-32 lead into the final eight minutes.

The Oldenburg lead grew to as many as 17 points on two separate occasions late in the game. The Twisters were 14-of-17 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to help preserve the victory.

Four players scored in double figures for coach Gary Moorman. Matt Moorman led the Twisters in scoring with 16 points followed by Geis (13), Matty Hurm (12) and Kloepfer (11).

The Twisters improved to 3-4 on the season and will next be in action Jan. 2 against Morristown at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse in the Indianapolis.

OA beats Shawe in consolation game

The Twisters were 65-52 winners over Shawe Memorial in the consolation game of the McKee Munk Invitational in Henryville.

The Twisters outscored the Hilltoppers 19-7 in the second quarter and did not trail the rest of the way. Oldenburg led 30-18 at halftime and later 51-35 at the end of the third.

Moorman finished with 23 points, while Sarringhaus added 17. Geis was third on the team with 10.

Crothersville wins opener by three

The eventual champion Crothersville Tigers opened the tournament with a 68-65 victory over the Twisters.

Oldenburg trailed at each of the first three quarter breaks, but rallied late to make it interesting.

Trailing 54-39 at the end of the third quarter, the Twisters outscored the Tigers 26-14 over the final eight minutes. Much like it has been all season, shooting from beyond the 3-point arc got the Twisters back in the game. Coach Moorman’s squad hit six 3-pointers to make it close. Sarringhaus hit three of his four in the game, while Moorman hit two and Hurm had one.

Moorman finished the game with 20 points followed closely by Sarringhaus with 18.
