OA girls hoopsters debut
Oldenburg Academy's varsity girls had a double weekend to start their 2017 basketball season. The Lady Twisters were overwhelmed Nov. 10 at Southwestern (Hanover), 58-28, and Southwestern (Shelby County) won a 70-60 duel Saturday night.
Falling behind 10-0 early and 17-2, OA trailed the Lady Rebels 33-10 by Friday's halftime break. The win doubled as Southwestern's 5th game of the young campaign. Junior Hanna Hurm scored 14 points for a Twister offense that managed double digits in just one frame. Claire Hollingsworth hit a pair of threes to add 6 points.
OA (0-2) has its home opener Nov. 14 against Lawrenceburg.
BHS C-team falls
The Batesville High School girls basketball C-team lost its season opener at Madison Nov. 9, 50-12. The ladies were held to 6 points or fewer in each quarter.
Katie Brewer led five scorers with 4 points. Kerigan Haskamp pulled down 7 rebounds while Grace Eckstein, Paige Oldham and Ellie Haverkos collected 4 each.
6th-grade Cards stay perfect
The St. Louis 6th-grade boys basketball squad improved to 6-0 by defeating Laurel 30-21.
Conner Miles provided half the scoring output with 15 markers and added 2 rebounds. Hank Ritter posted 9 points, 7 steals and 5 caroms with Calvin Grote, Carson Meyer and Evan Flaspohler each scoring a deuce. Meyer had a pair of boards; Preston Conway (3 steals) and Elliott Werner (2) were big on defense.
Laurel downs SLS 5th
St. Louis' 5th-grade boys suffered a 37-15 hardwood loss to Laurel's Yellow Jackets.
The Cardinals were led in scoring by Sam Laloge, who netted 6 points. Other scorers were Henry Wanstrath (4), Max Amberger (3) and Christian Mack (2). The team was led in rebounding by Amberger's 8; Laloge (5), Wanstrath (4), Mack (2), Santiago Schutte (2), Zavier Tekulve (1) and Adam Meer (1) added boards. "Despite the loss, the boys fought until the very end," coach Ryan Tekulve noted.
The Cards rematch with Laurel this evening.
7th-grade Cards win big
The St. Louis boys 7th grade basketball team defeated St. Mary`s Aurora in the OA Classic 47-11 on Nov. 11. The win evens the SLS mark to 2-2.. Scoring for the Cardinals were Charlie Schebler, Alec Bunselmeier, Benjamin Harmeyer, Noah Tuveson, Abe Hollins and Aiden Geers.
Eckstein named all-region
Big Ten Men's Cross Country Freshman of the Year Curt Eckstein earned all-region honors after placing 15th at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Nov. 10 in Terre Haute. In his first career 10,000-meter race, Eckstein ran a time of 31:23.8 and was the second fastest freshman overall.
The former Oldenburg star helped Purdue to its best regional finish in two decades as the Boilermakers placed fifth. Michigan and Michigan State were the two men's teams advancing to nationals.
Trojans return to semistate
For the third straight year, the East Central football team will play for a Class 4A state finals berth after cruising to a 35-13 regional win over Evansville Central Nov. 10 at St. Leon.
Quarterback Alex Maxwell rushed for 187 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Trojans past the state's 3rd-ranked team.
EC (10-3) will host 11-2 Greenwood Friday for the right to advance to Lucas Oil Stadium.
