I made a proposal at the Economic Development Commission meeting on Aug. 16 and there seemed to be some confusion about the proposal I made concerning the spec building.
All previous discussions concerning this building have been to locate it in the new industrial park on Merkel Road. To do that will require a significant expenditure to reconstruct Merkel Road to handle trucks and bring utilities into the industrial park. The amount of the expenditure will depend on how much the county commissioners agree to fund the project.
My proposal was to consider building the spec building in the current commerce park on Lammers Pike. The city owns a 13.3 acre tract of land in the current park and it is on I-74. The roads and utilities are already available to that location so we will not have to depend on Ripley County to provide any funding for road reconstruction. By being located on I-74 large banners advertising the building plus acreage available in the new industrial park could be easily seen by thousands of vehicles daily.
Another site which I mentioned was a city owned 20.5 acre parcel on Lammers Pike. Both of these sites would be large enough to construct the 50,000 sq. ft. building which is being considered. This also saves the larger tract for future development.
This may be prudent to save that larger tract for that hoped for major industry. I was surprised the commission gave no indication of having considered these locations and this proposal.
I strongly encourage everyone to attend a public meeting to hear more about this large building project. Per the article in the Aug. 20 Herald, the meeting is to be held the first week in September at a time and date to be announced.
