YMCA program helps strengthen community

-- — Dear Editor,

At the Southeastern Indiana YMCA, strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility is our cause.

In many places, the Y is known as a place to go swimming or work out, but it's much more than that; it's a place that changes lives.

For example, Safe Passage client “Carol”  has a son, 9, who participated in YMCA summer camp and gymnastics classes because of the partnership developed between the two organizations to provide opportunities and support to those affected by domestic violence. The support she received from the YMCA was invaluable. While "Carol" worked at putting her life back together, her son was provided with a summer of joy, experiencing life as he never had before. Summer camp opened his eyes to new adventures and many new friends.

Gymnastics classes helped him to gain confidence and new skills – vitally important for his healing. The staff went to great lengths to help provide transportation and made certain that his needs were met. These positive, supportive relationships have been a healing force and a wonderful example for this family. "Carol" is grateful for all the support she has received and her son continues to talk about his “awesome” summer.

Stories like this demonstrate the value of having a Y in Batesville, and there are many more who could benefit greatly from the different services and programs offered.

This is why we are launching our annual community support fundraiser, the Strong Kids Campaign. Your financial gift will help continue this important work.

We encourage everyone in the community to join our cause.  When we all pitch in and help our neighbors, we make a meaningful, enduring impact in the lives of children and families and, ultimately, strengthen our community.

Tim Dietz,

YMCA chief

volunteer officer
