---- —

Oma Cornett, 91, New Point, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, at Margaret Mary Health.

Born Feb. 4, 1922, in Letcher County, Ky., she was the daughter of Cullen and Polly Ann (Sexton) Thomas. She married Preston Cornett Jan. 17, 1940, in Letcher County, and he preceded her in death Dec. 27, 1993.

“Granny,” as she was lovingly called by almost everyone who knew her, loved her garden, her flowers, animals, the birds she fed daily, her church family, lost children and anything else that came through her yard or front door. Over the years, she traveled, read, crocheted, embroidered, worked puzzles and canned vegetables from her extensive garden. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren meant the world to her, and she attended as many of their life events as possible. She did her best to instill in her family love, good manners, a good education and the value of hard work. She was the glue that held her family together for so many years, and she will be sorely missed.

She is survived by her children: Randolph Cornett, New Point, Gary Wayne (Delores) Cornett, Greensburg, Janice Faye (Don) Ufferman, North Fort Myers, Fla., Lindell “Sam” (Cindy) Cornett, Batesville, Elizabeth Ann (Fred) Krieger, Greensburg, and Patricia Kay (Jim) Muckerheide, New Point. She will also be missed by her 14 grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren, along with many great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; stepchildren Vernon Cornett and Marjorie Ranger; sisters Edna Trent and Glessa Maggard; and brothers Chester, Culvert and Bennie Thomas.

Visitation will be Saturday, Oct. 19, from 5-8 p.m. at Meyers Funeral Home. Services will be Sunday, Oct. 20, at 1 p.m. at New Point Christian Church with Mark Vice officiating. Burial will follow in Rossburg Cemetery, New Point. Memorials are suggested to New Point Christian Church, Disabled American Veterans (DAV) or New Point Fire Department.
