Sister Catherine Raters, 84

Sister Catherine Raters, 84, formerly Sister William Cecile Raters, of the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at the convent.

Born Aug. 21, 1929, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Cecilia (Dunn) and William Raters.

She entered the convent Sept. 8, 1947, and made her final vows Aug. 12, 1953. The teacher taught students from preschool up to junior high ages at many schools, including St. Aloysius, Covington, Ky.; St. Bernard's, Taylor Creek, Ohio; Holy Trinity, St. Louis; St. Mary's Child Center, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Bernadette's and St. Martin Center College, now Martin University, Indianapolis. 

Sister Catherine would also spend seven years as an administrative assistant at American State Life Insurance Co., Indianapolis, before returning to teaching at Little People's Preparatory Day School, Indianapolis.

She is survived by her sister, Cecilia Strigari, Indianapolis; and brother Michael Raters, Indianapolis; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, William Raters.

Visitation is Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 1-3 p.m. at the Sisters of St. Francis Chapel, Oldenburg. Funeral services follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Gilday officiating. Burial is in the convent cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis. Weigel Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
