Sister Laurita Kroger, OSF, 99, of the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, died Sunday, March 9, 2014, at the convent.
Born Sept. 30, 1914, she was the daughter of Katherine (Hirsch) and Joseph Kroger.
She entered the convent Oct. 2, 1936, and made her final vows Aug. 12, 1944. Sister Laurita worked as a secretary in her family’s business for four years prior to entering the Sisters of St. Francis. She served as a secondary school teacher and principal, a teacher for 28 years, then as an administrator at Marian College for 17 years. She was a community councilor and treasurer for six years. She remembered her years in administration at Marian College were challenging because this was during the 1960s with student unrest throughout the country. Her time of community leadership included the years when many of the Sisters left the community and the pain that remained behind them.
Sister Laurita returned to the Motherhouse in 1988 for further ministry there and an eventual retirement of prayer and praise.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters Louise Kroger, Margaret Poelking and Katherine Moosbrugger; and brothers Herman, Bernard, Joseph, William, Claude and Paul Kroger.
Visitation is Wednesday, March 12, from 1-3 p.m. at the Sisters of St. Francis Motherhouse Chapel, Oldenburg. Funeral services follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph Nelson, OFM, officiating. Burial will be in the convent cemetery.
