Sister Alma Louise Kohnen, 101

-- — Sister Alma Louise Kohnen, 101, of the Sisters of  St. Francis, Oldenburg, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012, at the convent.

Born April 28, 1911, in Newport, Ky., she was the daughter of Florence (Kilp) and George Kohnen.

She entered the convent Dec. 27, 1928, and made her final vows July 2, 1934. She was an elementary school teacher for 49 years, recognized as an exemplary primary teacher who stressed a well-rounded educational and religious curriculum. She used her loving personality and artistic ability to make her classroom colorful and enjoyable for her students. She taught at St. Anthony’s, Evansville; St. Ann’s, Hamburg; St. Mary’s of the Rock, St. Mary’s; St. Joseph’s, St. Leon; St. Paul’s, New Alsace; St. Martin’s, Yorkville; St. Mary’s, Lanesville; St. Leo’s and St. Catherine’s, Cincinnati; St. Ann’s, Hamilton, Ohio; and St. Peter’s, Chillicothe, Ohio.

After teaching, she spent 15 years working at St. Peter’s Parish, Chillicothe, and the convent’s communication and archives offices. She retired in 1997, but continued as a minister of praise until her death.

Sister Alma Louise is survived by brothers Clarence and Harold.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Estelle and Lillian.

Visitation is Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 1-3 p.m. at the Motherhouse Chapel, Oldenburg. Funeral services follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Carl Hawver, OFM, officiating. Weigel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of  St. Francis.
