Lois J. Wanstrath, 84

-- — Lois J. Wanstrath, 84, Batesville, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at St. Andrews Health Campus.  

Born Jan. 3, 1928, in Cincinnati, she was the daughter of Myrle (Rhonemus) and Charles Grift. She married Louis Wanstrath Aug. 6, 1949, at Forest Hills, Ky., and he preceded her in death Feb. 1, 1981.  

She was a registered nurse and a homemaker. Lois attended Ursuline Academy in Cincinnati and was a graduate of St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing in northern Kentucky.  She was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, former 30-year director for the Golden Villa Board, former member of the Memorial Building Corp. and the Memorial Building Restoration Committee, served on the Batesville Memorial Public Library Board for 16 years and was selected by the Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce in 1995 as the Distinguished Service Award honoree.

For Lois, faith and giving back were staples of her life. She was very active with projects and functions at St. Louis Church as well as the Batesville community, donating not only money, but her time and talents also. Her family had horses growing up, and she held fond memories of them throughout her life. A unique hobby Lois enjoyed was collecting quilts. She often attended auctions looking for Amish quilts to purchase and would then donate them to local charities. She was also an avid Cincinnati Reds fan and in recent years liked going to the casinos to play slot machines.

Her true passion, though, was family. When her children were younger, she liked attending their sporting events, and when the grandchildren came along, she adored having them around. She loved having family around any time, but especially during the holidays and always looked forward to planning the Wanstrath, Grift and Krehnbrink family reunions. Her children talked about Mom being a good cook and an exceptional baker. Her baked goods and her homemade jellies were their favorites.  

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Nancy and Jake Flannery, Batesville, Cynthia Wanstrath-Whittaker, Batesville, and Rita and Bill Jerden, Bloomington; sons and daughters-in-law Theodore, Highland Heights, Ky., Steve, Batesville, Dan and Jan, Shelbyville, Mark, Cincinnati, and William “Bill” and Cindy, Batesville; sister Elaine Voorhees, Ryland Heights, Ky.; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.  

She was also preceded in death by her parents, sister Marcella Krehnbrink and brother Charles “Bud” Grift.

Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Weigel Funeral Home with a rosary service at 3:45 p.m. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at St. Louis Catholic Church with the Rev. Bill Farris, OFM, officiating, followed by burial in the church cemetery.  

The family requests memorials to New Horizons Rehabilitation Center.
