Donald A. Voegele, 73

— Donald A. Voegele, 73, Batesville, died Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at Margaret Mary Community Hospital.

Born July 5, 1939, in Batesville, he was the son of Anna (Staud) and Joseph Voegele. He worked as an accountant for Hillenbrand Industries and was a lifelong member of St. Louis Catholic Church.

In his younger days, Don liked to go fishing as well as squirrel and turtle hunting. At the age of 19, he was a passenger in a vehicle involved in an accident that left him partially paralyzed. His determination to keep moving forward and not feel sorry for himself has been an inspiration to his family. He always amazed them with his resolve, and they feel he was the glue that bound the family together. He seemed to have a personal relationship with each of his siblings and all of his numerous nieces and nephews. His was the type of personality everyone gravitated toward.

He participated in sports during high school and never lost his passion for sports, even after the accident. A huge IU fan, he pretty much loved watching anything that involved a ball, according to his family. Poker was another pastime he enjoyed and he played online often with friends who had moved away. In addition to oldies rock ’n’ roll, he also loved root beer and food. Recently, his favorites were Wendy’s chili and Subway sandwiches.

Don is survived by sisters Virginia Suding and Irene “Gertie” Shane, Batesville; brother Thomas, Milroy; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Mary Leinberger; and brothers Joseph, Eugene, Austin, John, Peter, Father Fritz, Hugo, Charles and Walter.

Visitation is Monday, April 1, from 4-7 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, at St. Louis Church with the Rev. Randy Summers officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family requests memorials to the Batesville Community Education Foundation or Riley Hospital for Children.
