— Victor J. Meyer, 89, St. Mary’s, died Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Margaret Mary Health.

Born Oct. 27, 1923, in Franklin County, he was the son of Louise (Munchel) and John Meyer. He married Marie Hartman Nov. 12, 1947, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Oldenburg.

Vic was a lifelong farmer after serving in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the Batesville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3183, Prell-Bland American Legion Post 271 and St. Mary’s of the Rock Catholic Church.  The recipient of the Indiana Soil and Water Conservation Board’s Farmer of the Year and Master Conservation Farmer awards was a   former FFA Advisory Board member, former St. Mary’s of the Rock Church Finance Committee member and former Farm Bureau director.

Vic was one of those people who stayed busy. After retiring from farming, he tried fishing, but gave it up because it was too boring. He kept busy with several hobbies that included woodworking, gardening and wine- making. According to his family, he made excellent wine. He was also an avid Reds fan and liked reading about the Civil War, cowboys and the history of Indiana. His tastes were varied, and some of his favorite foods included grits and fried apples, sauerkraut and cherry pie. He enjoyed watching the rural American network RFD TV and “Hee Haw.” Also an important part of his life was St. Mary’s Church, to which he gave generously of his time and talents to many committees and countless church functions and events. Additionally, he and Marie took care of the grotto on the church grounds for many years.

He is survived by his wife; daughters and sons-in-law Grace and Arthur Schneider, Batesville, Yvonne and Ronald Schneider, Sunman, Mary Louise Meyer and Richard Cartwright, Oldenburg, Eileen and Tim Duff, Hamilton, Ohio, Carolyn and Dale Sorber, Rushville, and Susan and Brad Everage, Simpsonville, Ky.; sons and daughters-in-law Eugene and Karen Meyer, Brookville, Dennis and Marlene Meyer, Greensburg, and Gary and Sue Meyer, Roy and Berna Meyer, Joe and April Meyer, John and Linda Meyer and Jerome and Nancy Meyer, Batesville; 33 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Angela Tebbe and Edna Bruns; and two grandchildren.

Visitation is Wednesday, April 17, from 4-8 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home. Services are at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 18, at St. Mary’s of the Rock Church with the Rev. Humbert Moster, OFM, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by the Batesville VFW and Prell-Bland American Legion posts.
