Catherine Frey, 88

Catherine A. Frey, 88, Batesville, died Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at St. Andrews Health Campus.

Born Nov. 10, 1924, at Cedar Grove, she was the daughter of Emma (Obermeyer) and John Moster. She married Paul Frey May 26, 1951, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Oldenburg, and he preceded her in death Jan. 31, 2007.

Katie had two great loves – family gatherings and playing cards. If you could combine them, it made for a perfect day. Euchre and 500 were her favorites. Katie also liked being on the farm. She could watch her birds and for years raised a large garden and had an orchard with several varieties of fruit trees. Her children recall the cherries were some of the best they’ve ever tasted. Naturally, what wasn’t eaten as it came out of the garden or off the tree was canned to be enjoyed over the winter months.

Like many of her generation who lived through the Depression, Katie was very thrifty and didn’t waste anything. Being out in the country also allowed her to build bonfires out of fallen limbs and such that would accumulate. According to the kids, fire safety wasn’t one of Mom’s strong points. Apparently, cooking wasn’t either. A lot of smiles and finally a description of “a creative cook” was agreed upon. She definitely was the matriarch of the family, and if any news or information needed to be passed along, the family would call Katie, and she in turn would notify everyone. However, being an early riser, your call may come at 4 or 5 in the morning.

She was a longtime volunteer for the Margaret Mary Health Pregnancy Crisis Hotline as well as a member of St. Louis Catholic Church and Knights of St. John Ladies Auxiliary. Some of her hobbies included embroidering and completing jigsaw and word search puzzles.
