John E. Wonning, 88, Osgood, died Thursday, June 25, 2009, at St. Andrews Health Campus.
The son of the late Monroe and Clara (Clemenz) Wonning was born in Batesville July 17, 1920. On April 17, 1945, in Louisville, Ky., he married Maxine (Bush) Wonning, who survives.
The Batesville High School graduate joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a B17 radio operator. He was wounded twice during World War II, when his plane was shot down over German-occupied France and when American planes strafed what pilots thought was a German troop train that actually was transporting both military and civilian prisoners of war. The saxophonist in several local dance bands worked for his father’s dairy farm and later bought his dad’s processing plant. The Florida mobile home park owner retired from Phillips Corp. there.
Also surviving are a daughter: Connie Walke, Osgood; three grandchildren: Jeff and Ben Walke and Tamara Drazick; and five great-grandchildren: Trae, Shaden and Devery Drazick and Tyler and Kayla Walke.
A sister, Juanita “Neetz” Lindemann, also preceded Wonning in death.
