Sister Teresa Carol Van Compernolle, 89, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, died Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at the convent.
Born Nov. 26, 1924, in Kansas City, Mo., she was the daughter of Matilda (Soetaert) and Alphonse Van Compernolle. She entered the convent Sept. 8, 1944, and made her final vows Aug. 12, 1947.
Sister Teresa Carol was a creative primary school teacher, spending most of her career teaching first grade. Coming from a large family, her quiet style and patience provided a very nurturing environment for her students. Schools she taught at included St. Joseph’s, St. Aloysius, St. Clare’s and St. Bonaventure’s, Cincinnati; St. Ann’s, Hamilton, Ohio; Holy Cross, St. Louis; Our Lady of Sorrows, Kansas City; Little Flower, St. Lawrence and Holy Trinity, Indianapolis; St. Gabriel’s, Connersville; and St. Anthony’s, Morris.
In later years, she spent three years at a business office in Florida before returning to the Motherhouse, where she became a nanny for three boys before retiring.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather Alphonse Van de Walle; brothers Henry, Maurice, William, John, Alphonse and Albert Van Compernolle; stepsisters Mary Trow and Audry O’Neil; and stepbrother Maurice Van de Walle.
Visitation is Friday, March 28, from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the convent chapel. Funeral services follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Gilday officiating. Burial is in the convent cemetery.
