Robert A. Patterson, 77

— Robert A. Patterson, 77, Hamburg, died Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at his residence.

Born July 5, 1935, in Marion County, he was the son of Elizabeth (Himes) and Charles Patterson. He married Bertha Dwenger Sept. 24, 1955, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Hamburg, and she preceded him in death Aug. 28, 2012. He served in the Navy from 1954-58 and went to work for Hill-Rom Co. after being discharged. He spent 35 years with Hill-Rom, retiring as a foreman.

Bob’s faith was important to him, and he donated countless hours of his time and talents to the church in several capacities, including serving for funerals and being a Eucharistic minister, lector and past parish council member. A huge fan of Western movies and books, he also liked working out in the yard, took pride in tending to the flower beds in the front yard and spent many years as a league bowler in Batesville. His kids teased that Dad was particular and gave the example that when setting up chairs at church, the rows had to be “just so.” Bob also had a sweet tooth. A weakness for doughnuts and a nightly bowl of ice cream were among his favorites.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law,  Cindy and Denny Lamping, Hamburg; sons and daughter-in-law Dan Patterson, Mike Patterson and Bill and Shelly Patterson, Hamburg; sisters Marlene Rickey, Indianapolis, and Nancie Eaton, Florida; brothers Michael and Patrick Patterson, Indianapolis; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, brother Joseph Patterson and grandson Rob Vance.

Visitation is Thursday, March 21, from 4-7 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Friday, March 22, at St. Anne’s Church with the Rev. George Nangachiveettil officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by Batesville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3183 and Prell-Bland American Legion Post 271.

The family requests memorials to St. Anne’s Cemetery Fund or Hospice of Margaret Mary Community Hospital.
