Opal J. Bloemer, 90

-- — Opal J. Bloemer, 90, Batesville, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, at The Waters of Batesville. Born Sept. 15, 1922, in Batesville, she was the daughter of Esther (Greve) and Odell Hickman.

Opal was the former owner of the Batesville Liquor Store.

Opal was an avid reader to say the least. She preferred romance novels and in later years, it was common for her to read five to six books a week. She also had an artistic side and would make pictures from seashells. A lifelong sports fan, her children remember spending weekends during their younger years at local ball diamonds. Although she liked to watch football and basketball, too, Opal was a big fan of the Cincinnati Reds and a longtime member of the Rosie Reds Club. A good cook, her family said everything she made was delicious and they especially liked her German potato salad and pot roast. Opal loved to travel with a couple of trips to Europe and a visit to Hawaii among her favorites.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Kay Hacker, Batesville; sons Gordon Giesting, Oldenburg, Gary Giesting, Martinsville, and Raymond “Rick” Bloemer, Batesville; grandchildren Todd Giesting, Oldenburg, Chad Giesting, Frisco, Texas, Jacob Hacker and Nancy Meyer, Batesville, Ryan Giesting, Bill Giesting and Shelly Giesting, Indianapolis, and Dena Waller, Zionsville; and great-grandchildren Hank Waller, Conrad Waller, George Waller, Taylor Meyer, Paige Meyer, Mattie Giesting and Tyler Giesting.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

There will be no visitation or viewing. Services will be at the family’s convenience. Weigel Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
