Sister Noel Marie Worland, 101, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, died Sunday, April 14, 2013, at the convent.
Born Nov. 20, 1911, in Shelbyville, she was the daughter of Susan (Wheeler) and John Worland.
She entered the convent Sept. 6, 1931, and made her final vows July 2, 1937. A teacher and principal for 52 years, schools where she worked in Indiana included St. Mary’s, Rushville; St. Vincent’s, Vincennes; St. Mary’s, Evansville; St. Andrew’s, Richmond; Little Flower, St. Mark’s and Our Lady of Lourdes, Indianapolis; St. Andrew’s, New Richmond; and St. Joseph’s, Shelbyville. She also educated at Tierra Amarilla, N.M.; as well as Ohio schools Sacred Heart and St. Clements, Cincinnati; St. Ann’s, Hamilton; and St. John’s, Middletown.
She will be remembered for her outgoing personality, kind disposition and love of her students in addition to the organization she brought to her teaching. A consummate reader, in later years she struggled with limited vision, but with the help of other sisters reading to her, she continued to enjoy the books she so loved.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother Lucy (Endres) Worland; sister Pauline Buckley; one niece; and one nephew.
Visitation is Wednesday, April 17, from 1-3 p.m. followed by services in the Motherhouse Chapel with the Rev. Carl Hawver, OFM, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis.
