---- —

Arlyn K. Sorce, 75, Batesville, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at Miller Senior Living Center, Indianapolis.

Born July 9, 1938, in Batesville, she was the daughter of Kathryn (Goldsmith) and Clifford Fichtner. She married Joseph Sorce Sept. 14, 1968, in Cincinnati.

A housewife for many years, she also spent seven years as keypunch operator for the University of Cincinnati and Suburban Key Punch Service and 11 years at Batesville Casket Co. before retiring in 1994. She was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, St. Rita School for the Deaf Alumni Association, Greater Cincinnati Deaf Club, Central Athletics Association of the Deaf (CAAD) and a former Miss CAAD pageant winner. She was also a member of the International Catholic Deaf Association of the United States, Chicago Catholic Ephpheta of the Deaf and International Games of the Deaf (IGD) and runner-up for the IGD pageant now known as the Deaflympics.

Arlyn had many interests. A photography buff, she enjoyed organizing her pictures into photo albums. And like many women, she, too, had a passion for shopping. With a strong maternal instinct, she loved being around babies and children. Her family indicated she was an excellent cook, and her lasagna and chicken stew were the best. She had a bit of sweet tooth and, apparently, was a bit of a chocoholic who baked “GREAT” brownies and was an ice cream junkie as well, according to her family. Arlyn liked reading "Movie Star" and "People" magazines, watching her favorite soap opera, “All My Children,” and seeing any movie with Esther Williams in it.

She is survived by her husband; sons and daughters-in-law Joseph Sorce, Chicago, David and Maria Sorce, Algonquin, Ill., Paul and Joanne Sorce, Chatham, Ill., and Steven and Anjanette Sorce, Westfield; sisters and brothers-in-law Darla and Hughie Benz, Batesville, Ella and Daniel Laker, Greensburg, and Mary Mays, Batesville; brothers and sister-in-law Richard and Barbara Fichtner, Stockton, Calif., and Daniel Fichtner, Batesville; and grandchildren Roseann, Marissa, Matthew, Cameron and Giovana; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Lisa Sorce and sister Judy Schutte.

Visitation is Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 9-11 a.m. at Weigel Funeral Home. Funeral services follow at 11:30 a.m. at St. Louis Church. A private family interment will be held. The family requests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association.
