Richard Alton Gibson, 76, Gloster, Miss., passed away at home Jan. 9, 2014.
Mr. Gibson was the son of Earl and Margaret Gibson, Batesville. He was born in 1937 at Letts Corner and was a 1955 graduate of Batesville High School.
After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was sent to Great Lakes Naval Training Station for basic training. He trained as an aviation electronics technician and served in several locations in Europe and later in Hawaii as a crewman on an airborne anti-submarine squadron. Later in his career, he volunteered for, and survived, three tours of duty in Vietnam.
After retirement from the Navy, he worked for Halliburton Industries in oilfield development. When he left Halliburton, he retired for good to Mena, Ark., where he lived until his house was destroyed by one of the tornadoes that hit Mena several years ago.
He is survived by his wife Anne (Toler) Gibson. Recently, in November 2013, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He is also survived by two sons: Richard Jr., San Antonio, Texas, and Barry, Chattanooga, Tenn.; brother Raymond Gibson, Columbus; and sister Marge Hooten, Batesville.
His daughter, Teresa, preceded him in death..
No funeral service was held, and cremation was specified at his request. Plans for a memorial service are still to be arranged.
