Freeman E. Giblin, 98

— Freeman E. Giblin, 98, Batesville, formerly of Sunman and Moores Hill, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Margaret Mary Community Hospital.

He was born May 20, 1914, in Moores Hill to Richard and Clara (Surber) Giblin.

The 1932 Moores Hill High School graduate began driving for Naas Trucking. He had a route from Sunman to Portland, hauling all types of tomato products, until he entered the United States Army in April 1941. He was in the 38th Cyclone Infantry Division, 152nd Infantry with his basic training at Camp Shelby, Miss. His tour of duty was in the Southwest Pacific theatre during World War II and some of the conflicts included the Battle of Bataan and Zig Zag Pass. He had little to say about his combat days, as wartime stories were kept to himself. He did talk of the places he saw and friendships that were made. In November 1945, Freeman left the military as a skilled mechanic and returned home with an honorable discharge.

Freeman went to work after the war for Osborn Motor Co., Sunman, as a mechanic for many years. Then he worked for McPhersons, Sunman, from which he retired.

On June 18, 1947, he married Mildred Baas in Penntown. She preceded him in death Oct. 22, 2009.

Freeman was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Penntown; Prell-Bland American Legion Post 271; and Free and Accepted Masonic Lodge 590, Sunman.

He will be greatly missed by his daughter and her husband, Sheryl and Paul Voss, Batesville; and his grandchildren, Amy (Joe) Rippe and Doug Voss; along with his great-grandchildren, Addyson, Aidan and Grayson Rippe and Kohlson, Lauren and Preston Voss.

He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Richard and Meredith Giblin.

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 19, from 4-7 p.m. and Wednesday, March 20, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. followed by the service officiated by the Rev. Lynne Busch at St. John UCC, Penntown. Burial with military rites follows at the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the church. Meyers Funeral Home is serving the family.
