Sister Mary Martin McHugh, 88, of the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at the convent.
Born Feb. 8, 1925, in Cincinnati, she was the daughter of Mary (Martin) and James McHugh.
She entered the convent Sept. 11, 1949, and made her final vows Aug. 12, 1955. Sister Mary Martin was an elementary teacher for 24 years at Little Flower School, Indianapolis; St. Vincent's Orphanage, Vincennes; Our Lady of Mercy, Dayton, Ohio; Sacred Heart, Fairfield, Ohio; and St. Clements, Cincinnati. In 1979, she studied hospital ministry and served as chaplain at the Bethesda and Good Samaritan hospitals, Cincinnati, for 22 years. Then she returned to the Motherhouse, serving as chaplain at St. Claire Hall before retiring in 2004.
Sister Mary Martin is survived by her sisters, Catherine Denier and Ann Parker, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James McHugh.
Visitation is Monday, Dec. 23, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Motherhouse chapel. Funeral services follow with the Rev. Humbert Moster, OFM, officiating. Burial is in the convent cemetery. Weigel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
