A routine traffic stop in Batesville May 18 led to the drug-related arrests of a Maryland man and a Cedar Grove woman, according to Batesville Police Chief Stan Holt.

BPD Officer Jamie Straber initiated a traffic stop on East Pearl Street for a minor traffic violation. Sgt. Danny Hamilton and his K-9 partner, Jinx, assisted on the stop. The K-9 alerted to the presence of illegal drugs, and a subsequent search revealed suspected heroin and hypodermic needles.

Matthew Phelps, 29, and his passenger, Ashley Reese, 20, were arrested and charged with possession of heroin and possession of a hypodermic needle, both Level 6 felonies.

Both were remanded to the custody of the Ripley County Jail and were released May 19 after each posted a $2,050 bond.

Holt noted, "All suspects have a legal presumptive of innocence until proven guilty."
