Brad Street, Southeastern Career Center, Versailles, director, presented Sunman-Dearborn Community School Corp. trustees Nov. 10 with information about the center.
“The programs we offer include everything from culinary arts and motorcycle and marine repair to health careers .... We have a very good reputation in numbers and size.
“We have opportunities for students to earn dual college credit .... When they complete the course, they have transcripted credits.”
The director added, “We have a school board composed of the 12 superintendents for the school districts we serve,” which includes SDCSC.
“There are 830-plus students at the career center this year, with 110-120 in satellite programs. I think we’ll see an increase next year because we’re still growing, advancing and improving.”
There was also a long discussion about the 2012-13 school calendar. Several community members expressed concerns about the proposed shortened summer vacation and whether moving to a so-called balanced calendar would increase the students’ academic performance. Others thought the public should have more input before a decision is made.
Members asked superintendent Dr. Jeff Hendrix to put together a survey for parents and teachers and compile results for the Dec. 8 meeting.
Trustees approved personnel recommendations: New: Jennifer Strimple and Donald Strimple, East Central High School assistant swim coaches; Landon Wilhelm, Sunman-Dearborn Middle School wrestling coach; Liane Garrett, Sunman Elementary School nurse; Tara Clark, North Dearborn Elementary School instructional assistant; resignations: Marla Hoskins, SES cafeteria worker; Jodie Fox, ECHS cafeteria worker; Sally Daugherty, Ripley-Ohio-Dearborn Special Education Cooperative occupational therapist; Brooke Icenogle, NDES instructional assistant; Carol Schmidt, ECHS custodian; termination: Kim Scheffel, NDES instructional assistant; retirement: Kris Wilson, support services director (as of Feb. 29, 2012.)
