State Representative Cindy Ziemke (R-Batesville) joined House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis) and other legislators, staff and state office holders in donating sporting equipment and other items to Special Olympics of Indiana today at the Statehouse.
“Special Olympics Indiana is honored to be chosen by Speaker Bosma for Organization Day. Research has found that individuals with intellectual disabilities who participate in Special Olympics become more involved in their communities. Our over 11,000 athletes throughout Indiana live, work and vote in almost every county throughout the state,” said Special Olympics Indiana CEO/President Michael Furnish.
Special Olympics of Indiana is a nonprofit organization that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. These athletes represent 74 county and local programs each run by volunteer management teams who recruit participants, conduct sports training, raise money, build awareness and compete at local and state events.
“Showing our support for Special Olympics of Indiana was the perfect opportunity for the legislature to come together, politics aside, and reach out to an organization that has had an remarkably positive impact on Hoosiers all over the state,” said Speaker Bosma. “These men and women who work in this field are a shining example of servant leadership, and it was a privilege to have them join us at the Statehouse today.”
Legislators and staff brought in sporting equipment, food, drinks, office supplies and other items for Special Olympics of Indiana. Five athletes were present to accept the donations and thank those who participated in the collection efforts.
“Having the opportunity to meet such inspiring athletes and support an organization that reaches so many people worldwide was an honor,” said Rep. Ziemke. “The men and women who work so hard serving this organization deserve multitudes of praise. I hope that we helped at least a little, and I look forward to keeping up with all the fantastic accomplishments of Special Olympics of Indiana.”
