RAA's first film series planned

Area residents can celebrate cinema at its finest – on the big screen – with the Rural Alliance for the Arts Classic Film Series, which will come to the Gibson Theatre in Batesville on three January and February Fridays at 7 p.m. The trio are in the American Film Institute’s list of top five movies of all time.

• Jan. 17: “The Godfather” (AFI No. 2). This 1972 American crime drama, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, stars Al Pacino, Marlon Brando and James Caan. “Winner of three Academy Awards and regarded as one of the greatest films in world cinema, don’t miss your chance to see it again, or for the very first time!” says RAA publicity chair Kathleen Bohman.

• Feb. 14: “Casablanca” (AFI No. 3. Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman are legendary in the 1942 romantic drama. Winner of three Academy Awards, this film focuses on a man torn between love and virtue. “It’s the perfect Valentine’s Day date. Bring your sweetheart and a box of tissues!” she suggests.

• Feb. 28: “Singin’ in the Rain” (AFI No. 5) One of the best musicals ever made, this film will have toes tapping. Released in 1952 and starring Gene Kelley, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds, this light-hearted comedy will be great fun for the whole family.

RAA President T.J. Greene says of the Classic Film Series, “It’s a wonderful opportunity to see a few of AFI’s greatest movies of all time. ‘The Godfather,’ ‘Casablanca’ and ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ are all from three very different movie genres that span several decades. ‘The Godfather’ is the most recognizable mobster movie of all time. ‘Casablanca’ is a love story that takes place during World War II ... ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ is a musical that will brighten anyone’s day as we move into the beginning of spring.”

RAA (www.ruralalliancearts.com) is offering movie passes that can be purchased now for Christmas or holiday hostess gifts or thank-yous for teachers or customers. Recipients can redeem the passes at the box office at the movie of their choice. Tickets costing $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors can be purchased at the door or ahead of time by calling RAA executive director Joan Kuhlman at 933-0355.
