Girl Scout Troop 81148 Cadettes are working toward their Silver Award. Their project is to replace the flooring at the Batesville Area Ministerial Association Food Pantry. All monies donated to the Flocking for Food Pantry Flooring fundraiser will go toward this project.
They want to collect $5,000, a lofty goal for just five girls: Batesville Middle School eighth-graders Hope Gilbert and Kodi Pate and seventh-graders Shelbie Thompson, Brooklyn Goldsmith and Emillee Crowell.
“The idea of flocking someone is intended to be good-natured and not mean-spirited,” reports troop leader Jennifer Pate. The groups of pink flamingos come in small, medium or large flocks. A small flock is 12 birds ($15 donation), a medium is 24 birds ($25 donation) and a large flock is 48 birds ($45 donation).
A friend or family member can order a flock to land on someone’s property by contacting the leader at batesvilleGSfundraiser@gmail.com; 812-933-0307 or 812-498-2872 (leave a message if no answer).
The Girl Scouts then make sure that the flock arrives sometime in the evening, preferably without the owner catching them. The victim will wake up to the surprise flocking. The birds will stay there all day, until the girls retrieve them that evening. The owner can decide to “pay it forward” or not, but any and all donations are appreciated. The leader adds, “If someone wants the birds removed immediately, all they need to do is call me and I’ll go out and get them myself. We truly do not want any hard feelings about this.”
According to Pate, “We need to have our goal met by mid-July, so we’ll be doing this all spring and summer or until the goal is met.” The Cadettes have to have their project done and submitted by the first week of August.
If someone absolutely does not want to be flocked, flocking insurance can be purchased for $10. “This will insure that our pretty, but pesky birds won’t land on the property,” she says.
Persons who would like to donate toward the project can send a check made out to Girl Scout Troop 81148 (or simply Girl Scouts) to Girl Scouts, c/o Jennifer Pate, 1235 Lammers Pike, Batesville, IN 47006.
According to Pate, “The girls are working so hard. They’ve done a bake sale and sold cookies (we still have some available for persons to purchase), but this is our main fundraiser.”
