Sunman Legion Post 337 holds appreciation program

American Legion Post 337, Sunman, held an appreciation program March 16, according to Commander Tina Workman.

Several individuals were recognized: Boys State recipients, Shay Roepke and Evan Fisher, will be attending a weeklong program and learn many aspects of the government and how it works.

Flag etiquette essay winners were Braden Walker and Lara Moster, Sunman Elementary School students, and Rebecca Kilby and Nathan Schuman, St. Nicholas School, Sunman, students. These fourth-graders “wrote wonderful essays regarding what the American flag means to them,” Workman noted.

Boy Scout Troop 620 members and Eagle Scout Noah Love were introduced. The group is charted by the Legion, and the boys were also serving the food for the dinner. Girl Scout Troop 5525 members were also in attendance and helping clean off tables and assisting guests. “The girls are present at every Post 337 event, helping with a myriad of tasks, even though they have no official affiliation with the Legion at this time,” the commander revealed.

Michael Blevins was honored as a 50-year American Legion member, and Alvin Retzner was recognized as a 70-year member.

Blue Star Flag recipients were Bill Knueven, whose son, Andrew, is active-duty military; Randy Knueven, whose son, Ben, is active-duty military; Amy and Brian Emerson, whose son, Jake, is active-duty military; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Mobley, whose grandson, Ben, is deploying to Afghanistan; and Shelby Lynn Brown, whose husband, Jalen, is deployed to Afghanistan.

The Blue Star Flag is red-bordered, and the number of blue stars in the middle represents how many immediate family members are serving in the military on active duty or overseas.

In addition, Rita Seig spoke briefly regarding the Salute A Soldier 5K Run/Walk. The annual event is held at the Sunman post in honor of Anthony Seig, a member of the Army who gave his life for his country in Afghanistan in 2006. “The Legion is very honored that the Seigs chose Post 337 as the location for the event,” Workman emphasized.

“I would like to thank all that attended the dinner and the awards program. Additionally, I would like to thank all that support the American Legions and our veterans.”
