---- — The application deadline for the Southeastern Indiana Recycling District Students Making an Environmental Difference Scholarships for graduating high school seniors is Monday, April 7, at 3 p.m., said education and public outreach coordinator Gary Marlin.
Pending adequate submissions, one award winner from each county will be selected from the entries received from Franklin, Ripley, Jefferson, Jennings, Ohio, Scott and Switzerland County high schools, for a total of $7,000.
To apply, applicants must complete a form and include a 500-word essay that describes environmental interests, efforts and activities within the school and community. Applicants should use facts to describe personal endeavors and pursuits. SEIRD scholarship panelists are interested in learning how entrants have made an environmental difference through their activities rather than read a definition of recycling. Examples of efforts include volunteering, work, school and neighborhood activism.
Applicants should also disclose how they plan on staying environmentally involved in the future. At least one letter of recommendation from a counselor or teacher should be included.
Downloadable applications are available on the seird.org Web site. Forms also can be requested from high school guidance counselors or by e-mailing Marlin at firstname.lastname@example.org. Questions can be answered by contacting SEIRD at 800-997-4793. Applications can be e-mailed, faxed or mailed.
Winners will be announced by an SEIRD team or board member during the students’ senior awards programs.
