Local food forum Wednesday

Local food system leaders will host a community forum Wednesday, March 5, from 4-6 p.m. with the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service Rebuilding Your Local Food System Team. The event will be held at Batesville’s Memorial Building, 132 S. Main St., in the council chambers on the second floor.

Wednesday’s meeting will focus on innovations in this region around local food, farming, entrepreneurship farm to school, local food retail and purchasing, among other topics. Interested community members, business owners and others interested in local food system redevelopment are encouraged to attend. Snacks and refreshments will be served.

Reservations are preferred: Kathy Cooley, 933-5267 or kathy.cooley@mmhealth.org.

After a competitive application process, the southeastern Indiana region has been chosen as one of two state areas to participate in the year-long Rebuilding Your Local Food System Program Pilot for 2014.

As pilot program participants, a core group of local food system leaders will participate in monthly meetings, workshops, conferences and travel to learn more about innovations in local food systems. The core group leaders are Bonnie Robbins, Sarah Lamping, Dr. Jim Roberts, Erik Tuveson, Chris Merkel and Kathy Cooley.

“This Purdue Extension program will enable communities to better understand their local food system, engage multiple groups in a dialogue about rebuilding their local food system and assist with a strategic plan for implementing their rebuilding strategy,” says Michael Wilcox, Purdue Extension assistant program leader for economic and community development.

After the program ends, pilot regions will have a better understanding of the components of the local food system, available resources for redeveloping its infrastructure and the significant role that broad community support plays to make such a system a success.

Jodee Ellett, Purdue Extension local foods coordinator, has more information on the Rebuilding Your Local Food System Program at 765-494 0349 or jellett@purdue.edu.
