Farm private applicator exams offered March 3

The Batesville Herald-Tribune

---- — “The application of pesticides, manure and other fertilizers is a precise agricultural tool. The proper use of these products is instrumental in maintaining the agricultural productivity that feeds our world today,” said Anna Morrow, Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service ag and natural resources educator in Franklin County.

Misuse of these same products can have negative environmental impacts. Because of their importance and potency, the state of Indiana requires farmers who wish to apply restricted use pesticides or manure from confined feeding operations to their own land to have permits. To be eligible for an applicator’s permit, farmers must pass a thorough exam and attend educational recertification programs. Purdue Extension is essential at the state and county level for the training and education of farmers using these regulated products.

Farmers interested in qualifying for a permit to apply restricted use pesticides, fumigants, manure from confined feeding operations (CFOs) or fertilizer for hire will need to pass an exam. The extension office will host Purdue Pesticide Programs private applicator exams Monday, March 3, from 3-6 p.m. at the Schilling Community Center, 900 Mill St., Brookville. Exams offered include Pesticide Core Exam, Category 14 Manure/Fertilizer Application Exam and Category 7d Fumigation Exam. Test-takers must show government-issued photo IDs.

Exams can be taken any time between 3 and 6 p.m., but no exam may be started unless the full time limit allowed for that exam remains in the testing period, according to Morrow. For instance, a 90-minute exam may not be started if only 80 minutes remain. Exam time limits are Category 7d, one hour; Core and Category 14, one and a half hours. Examinees will be limited to two different exams, the number that can be completed within the three-hour testing period.

Training for the Category 14 Agricultural Fertilizer Application exam will be offered at 1 p.m. there.

There will be no commercial category exams at this location.

Registration is requested for these exams by calling 800-319-3090 or e-mailing Cheri Janssen at cjanssen@purdue.edu.

Pesticide Core and 7d Fumigation training manuals can be purchased from the Franklin County office for $30. Category 14 agricultural fertilizer application training manuals can be purchased from the office for $10 or downloaded from www.ppp.purdue.edu.
