The locally-made 2009 TV commercial “Free Doritos” has landed at No. 21 on USA TODAY’s Top 25 Ad Meter Super Bowl commercials, according to a page 6B article published Jan. 28. The newspaper’s advertising editors and reporters analyzed each year’s winning commercials to rank them.
Joe Herbert, then 33, Batesville, and Dave Herbert, then 31, Morris, were one of five finalists in the third “Crash the Super Bowl” contest, sponsored by Doritos. By becoming a finalist, the duo earned $25,000 and a trip to Tampa for Super Bowl XLIII.
Doritos also awarded the pair a $1 million bonus for topping USA TODAY’s annual Ad Meter with their video, which showed an office worker using a snow globe to make predictions. He said that everyone will get free chips, then threw that crystal ball into a Doritos vending machine’s glass to break it open.
“Free Doritos” aired during the first half of the Feb. 1, 2009, game. Later the brothers were interviewed on TV’s “Today” show, “CNN” and “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”
