Several presentations were made during the Oct. 10 Sunman-Dearborn Community School Corp. board of trustees meeting, according to superintendent Dr. Jeff Hendrix.
Krista Slayback, East Central High School nurse, expressed the need for oxygen tanks in the buildings. “Since some of the buildings are kind of remote, the response time for emergency squads is about five to ten minutes, but the need for oxygen is within the first five minutes in order to stabilize the situation,” he reported. Trustees agreed to having them in the buildings.
Bev Ester, ECHS guidance director, said the school had a 97.6 percent graduation rate last year. Seventy-seven percent of the Class of 2013 members were looking at furthering their education by attending college or technical school or joining the military.
“By adding dual credit, students are gaining college credits and saving money,” Hendrix announced. Students have received anywhere from three to 20 credits, and 2,644 credits have been awarded. Students/parents have spent $31,525 on classes, but have saved $487,170 by “getting college credits through our high school.”
Principals gave presentations on their ISTEP scores. Some also talked about what practices were in place for remediation and enrichment.
Tom Harris, SDCSC support services director, discussed looking at a two-year school calendar instead of a one-year. He will be presenting more information at a future meeting, the superintendent reported.
