BATESVILLE — President Carla Hacker recapped the year’s accomplishments and outlined the 2013 initiatives during the Nov. 7 Sunman Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Appreciation Banquet at the Kenneth L. Diver American Legion Post 337, Sunman.
“Everybody has worked really hard, and it has been a really successful year.” Two after-hours events were held. The first consisted of a question and answer period with the town marshal and Indiana State Police and Ripley County Community Foundation representatives. “We found out from the foundation what we have available to donate or contribute to ... and about endowments for the Sunman area. There were a lot of things we didn’t know about.” A second program discussed Medicare facts and myths.
“We plan to have another one early in the first quarter of next year at Wiedeman Heating and Electric. We’re looking for ideas on something to showcase. Anyone can host an after-hours event. You provide the place and light refreshments, and we provide the speakers,” she revealed.
The Sunman Beautification League is very active. Members bought gifts, eggs and candy for the Easter egg hunt. “They also do the planters around town, water plants, pull weeds and put on Sunman Cleanup Day the first Saturday in May. Now they’re getting ready to decorate for Christmas.”
The chamber hosted a circus. “It’s been 15 years or more since we’ve had one here. The best part was we made about $2,000 ... with very little work.
“There were a lot of people who took advantage of the farmers' market. I considered it a success because vendors felt like they were successful and made money.”
The president noted, “Sunman Daze was a great idea. There were yard sales, sidewalk sales, all kinds of things going on. We had a lot of great feedback on that. It will be held the first Friday and Saturday in June again next year.
