Voter turnout not record-breaking in the area

BATESVILLE — At 1 p.m. Tuesday, the election turnout was “super-good” at Batesville’s Ward 3, Precinct 2, felt clerk Katie Hegwood.

But not record breaking.

In Ripley County, 53.2 percent of registered voters cast ballots, well below 58.5 percent in 2008 and 61.3 percent in 2004.

Franklin County voters were more engaged with 57.7 percent going to the polls, still down from 58.5 percent in 2008, 60.6 percent in 2004 and 58.8 percent in 2000.

In Ripley County, Jackson Township, Napoleon, had the highest percent of voters with 66.4 percent, and Franklin 3, Milan, had the lowest with 33.9 percent.

Other precincts close to Batesville had a wide range of voters participate: Adams 1, 62.3 percent; Adams 2, 52.9 percent; Adams 3, 54.1 percent; Laughery 1, 64.7 percent; Laughery 1-1, 54.3 percent; Laughery 1-2, 48.5 percent; Laughery 2-1, 57 percent; Laughery 3-1, 50 percent; and Laughery 3-2, 56.2 percent.

Looking at how many Franklin County people voted in each precinct, Ray 1 had the best showing at 67.6 percent.

The fewest number – 40.7 percent – came to the polls in Laurel.

Precincts near Batesville fell in between those: Salt Creek 2, 57.3 percent; Batesville 1, 59.3 percent; Salt Creek 1, 59.9 percent; Butler, 61.4 percent; Batesville 2, 62.8 percent; Oldenburg Corp., 63.9 percent; and Ray 2, 66.2 percent.

In Franklin County, 1,488 voted by absentee ballot, said first deputy Jenna Simmermeyer Nov. 8.

That’s on par with the 1,400 or so absentee voters during the 2008 presidential election.

Seven ballots that arrived by mail Nov. 7, one day after the Election Day deadline, did not count, she explained.

In Ripley County, 1,818 persons voted by absentee ballot, more than the 1,775 four years ago, according to election deputy Diane Macek.
