BATESVILLE —

The driver of an Amish buggy was killed after it collided with a pickup truck Sept. 26, according to Sgt. Noel Houze, Indiana State Police Versailles District public information officer.

About 10 p.m., a horse and buggy rig operated by Daniel X. Stoltzfus, approximately 18, Versailles, was traveling northbound on U.S. 421 near County Road 450 S. when for unknown reasons the buggy crossed over into the southbound lane where it was struck head-on by a southbound 2001 Ford F250, four wheel drive pickup truck driven by Wilma E. Asher, 53, Versailles.

The impact killed the horse and ejected Stoltzfus into the northbound lane of U.S. 421, where he may have been struck by one or two northbound vehicles, a 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Jeffrey W. Clippert, 54, Madison, and a 2003 Pontiac SUV driven by Chester R. Swinney, 54, Versailles. None of the other drivers were injured.

The crash remains under investigation by ISP Trooper Matt Holley. He was assisted at the scene by Master Trooper Ben Bastin, Trooper Travis Linville, Ripley County Sheriff’s deputies, Ripley County EMS and New Marion Fire Department.
