Friends of BMPL support activities and programs

Sunman may be getting a branch of the Batesville Memorial Public Library in its town hall. For that to occur, the library district would have to expand to include all of Adams Township, instead of part.

According to state law, because Sunman’s population is small, the only way for residents to get a library would be to join a larger one, director Mike Kruse told Friends of Batesville Memorial Public Library members Feb. 3.

Library trustees discussed the possibility Jan. 27. If they decide to add the branch, their number would remain seven, but the move would change the board makeup, Kruse explained. Now three are appointed by Batesville Community School Corp. leaders. If the Sunman branch does open, one would be appointed by the Sunman-Dearborn Community School Corp.

After attending a seminar on acquiring e-books and other media, the director said BMPL will join a consortium of libraries its size in southern Indiana. The consortium will allow the library to offer patrons digital downloads of books and audios from a company called Overdrive, the same one used by the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library system.

“What I've seen I've really liked,” he reported. “We'll be able to pick all the titles we want. Some can be shared with consortium members and others can be purchased just for Batesville library patrons.”

Kruse favored Overdrive over the company now supplying downloads, Netlibrary. “It's been unreliable lately (and) we don't have much choice in the titles that are selected.”

Kruse said he expected Overdrive will be accessible on the library’s Web site www.ebatesville.com/ library/ sometime in March.

Members voted Nov. 4 to contribute $1,986 from the nonprofit’s treasury to four library programs: $700 for the annual tea party, $536 for telescope accessories, $500 for After Hours Concert Series shows and $250 for the children’s Christmas party. Now the treasury contains $2,372.50.
