---- — The fourth annual Light up the Night Community Tree Lighting is Thursday, Dec. 5.
The event, sponsored by the city of Batesville in conjunction with Batesville Main Street, “will be a fun outing for family and friends to attend to get in the holiday spirit,” announces Sarah Lamping, the city’s community development director.
New this year, “we are going to have a canned food drive” to benefit the Batesville Area Ministerial Association Food Pantry. The first 350 people to donate nonperishables off to the side of the Memorial Building will receive a surprise. “We will be giving away elf hats and jingle bells,” she reveals.
Mayor’s Youth Council members will light luminaries downtown. A Children’s Lantern Parade will begin at the Community Church of Batesville, 103 E. George St. Youngsters interested in participating can contact Deb Enneking at 932-3322.
Community choirs will also join in the procession to the Memorial Building, where Mayor Rick Fledderman will read a proclamation. Then the tree lighting takes place, “church bells will toll, a special guest will arrive and the Christmas season officially begins.” The city’s holiday tree was donated by Bohman Christmas Tree Farm, she notes.
Fire pits will be on site to keep attendees warm. “Hot chocolate, coffee and holiday cookies will be served by the church .... (and) they’re having a Santa’s workshop open to the children from 5:30-7:30 p.m.” Free carriage rides will be provided by Vogt’s Farm.
There will be free entertainment at the Gibson Theatre. The Batesville Singers will start off the program followed by two groups from Miss Shannon’s Music Studio.
