Downtown street party June 15

— Batesville residents will have the chance to relax at a summer street party, but they better not speed to get there.

Kim Powell, Gibson Theatre operator, requested that North Main Street be closed from Boehringer Street to Hillenbrand Avenue for a party Saturday, June 15, from 3-10 p.m.

Batesville Board of Works member Gene Lambert said, “I like the idea. I would support the request,” which was approved May 13.

In addition to the Gibson, three other businesses there, Snikkers & Peanuts, Joan’s T-shirts and Benny’s Bar, are sponsoring the event, which begins at 4 p.m. with a free family movie.

Girls Scouts will man a children’s game and there will be food and booth spaces for vendors. A band will perform from 7:30-9:30 p.m. “We hope to put a stage over by the barbershop since it’s closed,” Powell reported.

Police Chief Stan Holt asked the council to allot $4,795 from Belterra riverboat revenue-sharing funds to purchase one portable speed sign that can be mounted to a street sign.

The current one, which collects the traffic count, average speed and high and low numbers, is nine years old and heavy to move due to a concrete base.

Member Bob “Tuba” Narwold predicted Belterra funding will decrease. He suggested getting by with the sign the city already has. The chief maintained it “slows people down.”

Member Darrick Cox said, “If we do get (another) one, we are essentially doubling the amount of areas we can cover.”

The proposal passed 4-1, Narwold opposed. The current sign will be modified so it is lighter and easier to move around.

The Batesville Board of Works signed a customary annual agreement to pay farmer Dennis Siebert, 12611 N. County Road 100 W., $1,500 so that about 500,000 gallons of sludge from the wastewater treatment plant could be applied to 15 acres on his property.
