Tornado did touch down near Osgood

A tornado occurred four miles north of Osgood Feb. 20 at about 10:14 p.m., National Weather Service, Wilmington, Ohio, experts have confirmed.

Its maximum path width was 50 yards and its length was 0.8 mile. There were no injuries or fatalities, according to the news release.

“The tornado first touched down near a mobile home on North Finks Road just north of West County Road 700 North. The mobile home was moved up to 15 feet off its foundation and in the process this knocked down two brick walls that were 2 feet high.”

Windows were blown out on three sides of the home and major roof damage also occurred, according to the news release. “Insulation from this mobile home covered the east-facing side of the structure, indicating strong rotating winds.”

NWS officials decided, “Based on the damage surveyed, this portion of the tornado path was classified as EF-1 with winds up to 90 miles per hour.”

Just before the twister lifted, two pole barns were damaged. The southeast corner of the first one completely collapsed and some siding on all four sides was missing. The second structure, just south of the first, had 20-30 percent of its roof missing and ABOUT 15 percent of siding gone from three sides with 40 percent missing from the fourth. The report stated the barns’ damage indicated the storm at this point was an EF-0 tornado with 70 mile-per-hour winds.

Ripley County Emergency Management Agency, Ripley County Sheriff’s Office and Napoleon Volunteer Fire Department personnel responded to the incident, reported RCEMA director Patrick Rose.
