---- — The Versailles Pumpkin Show, sponsored by the Versailles Lions Club, has continued for over a century and still brings thousands of visitors to Ripley County.

“It’s like a homecoming,” reports show President Jerry Gilpin. “There’s good, clean family fun in a small-town setting, and everybody’s friendly and nice.

“We have between 15,000-20,000 people here on Saturday when we have a huge parade (please see schedule in box), which lasts for an hour and a half. We get a lot of bands there and other entries. People like to see the kids excited.”

A teen dance at the Tyson Activity Center has been added to the festivities, he says. “It will be nice for the kids,” he points out.

Students in grades 7-12 are invited to attend. The cost is $5, reports Tammy Halcomb of the sponsoring Tyson Activity Center.

We’re adding more on Sunday, too, Gilpen announces. A community church service takes place in the morning, and a gospel group performs in the afternoon. “We’re also having the 5K run/walk again.

“There’s no cost for the entertainment, and other items are not overly expensive.” In addition, Wednesday and Saturday are one ticket ride days, he reveals.

Fest proceeds go to the Lions Club and is “turned back into the community for projects at the schools, Little League, soccer, vision screenings .... (Members) buy gifts for kids at Christmas, support the National Honor Society and FFA, Cub Scouts, Girl and Boy Scouts and Boys and Girls State. Every dime goes back to the community to help with projects these kids may not have had otherwise.”

The president encourages the public to attend the five-day event because “we’re the oldest fest in the state of Indiana. That says a lot right there. Why wouldn’t you want to come to this? It’s a fun place to be.”
