---- — New Point Crackaway Daze will take place Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 21-22.

On Saturday, a car show will be added to the festivities, reports fest chairman Paul Walterman. Preregistration is $10, and $12 the day of the event (please see schedule in box). Judging will take place at 4 p.m. with trophies awarded to the Top 25, Best in Show, King and Queen’s Choice and Participants’ Choice.

Persons can contact Robert Thomas at 812-614-0094 for more information or to sign up.

Other fest highlights include a hospital bed race downtown. Teams of five can participate with four pushing the bed and one acting as the patient. Prizes are awarded for the top finishers.

A parade will be held. “We usually have between 60-90 entries,” the chairman reveals.

Then there’s a hog roast dinner and “one of our big attractions is we cook a big pot of beans, 24-26 pounds, in a kettle over a fire. It’s very delicious.”

There’s also a pie contest. “Anybody can bake a fruit pie or a cream pie .... Three judges decide on the best ones, and cash prizes will be awarded,” he notes.

A raffle drawing takes place at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. For the grand prize, “if your name is drawn and you are present on the grounds, you receive $500. If not, the winner gets $250 and another name is drawn for $250.” In addition, other prizes will include gift certificates, cash, T-shirts and items from area merchants.

On Sunday, a fried chicken dinner includes three pieces of chicken with cole slaw or applesauce, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, green beans, dessert and drink for $8.50. A whole chicken carryout is $9.

During the two-day fest, “we will also have a country store with some Amish baked goods. There will be entertainment and flea markets on the grounds. There are pony rides and bouncy houses for the kids, homemade ice cream, snow cones and a hot dog stand.

“A committee of about 15 people meet four to six times prior to the festival. We put people in charge to make it a success and better each year .... The help we have from my committee is fantastic. If it wasn’t for them and the volunteers, it wouldn’t happen. It’s wonderful that this small community can pull it together,” Walterman points out.

“We’ve been very successful. We have great attendance, and we’ve been doing this for 20 years. We usually serve more than 300 dinners on Saturday and equal to that on Sunday,” he recalls.

Proceeds go toward the upkeep of the community building and other projects. “We also make donations to the fire department.”
