RC food establishments inspected

A Ripley County restaurant has shown improvement over the past six months in its surprise Ripley County retail food establishment inspections.

From Nov. 14, 2012-May 17, the Old Brick Tavern, Sunman, has had 14 critical and 14 noncritical violations. The more serious infractions ranged from a drain leaking into the basement and insects in the kitchen to date markings not being used and equipment not looking or feeling clean. Noncritical items included a vent hood having a buildup of debris, sink basins at the bar needing to be cleaned and utensils being stored in a nonfood grade bucket.

For the most recent inspection last quarter, the report stated the employees/owner were “making progress – continue cleaning.” Two critical violations that day – cheese uncovered in the refrigerator and fish uncovered in the freezer –and a noncritical item – a nonshielded light – were corrected. However, more lighting was still needed in the kitchen, a less serious issue.

Other county establishments also had critical issues, many dealing with inadequate temperatures, uncovered food in refrigerators/freezers, items in or on handwash-only sinks and dirty ice machines. Some common noncritical items were pans not being air dried prior to stacking and lack of towels at the handwash station.

The findings for Batesville establishments included Batesville Food Mart, seven critical violations and three noncritical; Walhill Farm/The Butcher Shoppe Bar & Grill, five critical and four noncritical; Casa Mexicana, five critical and two noncritical; Benny’s Bar, four critical and six noncritical; Gallery Cafe, four critical and five noncritical; Weiler’s Hobo Hut, four critical and four noncritical; Hillcrest Golf & Country Club, four critical and one noncritical; East Bowl Family Fun Center, two critical and four noncritical; Big Four Cafe, Ertel Cellars Winery & Bistro, Huck’s, Lil’ Charlie’s Restaurant & Brewery and Sherman House, two critical and one noncritical; Skyline Chili, two critical; Arby’s, one critical and four noncritical; Schmidt Bakery, one critical and three noncritical; Aramark/Hill-Rom Cafe and Ison’s Family Pizza, one critical and two noncritical; Pizza Haus, one critical and one noncritical; and Knights of Columbus, Harmeyer’s Market and Snikkers & Peanuts, one critical.
