The Skills, Tasks and Results Training (START) Program is a 14-week curriculum designed to introduce 12 career opportunities within the hotel and lodging industry and teaches the skills necessary to do each job.

It will be offered at the Education Center of Rising Sun, 590 Smart Drive, starting Tuesday, Sept. 3. Classes are on Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30-3:30 p.m. or 6-8:30 p.m. High school students and adults may choose the time that best suits their schedules. The class cost is $75.

The START curriculum was developed by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute and is designed to give learners actual industry skills needed to secure long-term careers. Learning experiences include resume writing, job shadowing, speakers from the industry, chef demonstrations, hotel tours and interactive classroom learning.

The program is taught by Sandra Bowlus, an educator for over 37 years. She promotes confidence and positive work ethics, as well as guest service and professionalism.

Students successfully completing the program will be issued a national AHLA certification. A START certification guarantees an interview with one of three area casinos and resorts, Belterra, Rising Star and Hollywood. Students applying to Hollywood Casino must be at least 21.
